Welcome to Northlight Architecture.
Northlight Architecture is a small architectural consultancy based in the Yorkshire town of Holmfirth. Our success is founded on the close relationships we build with our clients, many of whom come back to use our services again and again. We explore your requirements and aspirations for a project in great detail to develop a solution that completely satisfies your immediate requirements and will also meet future expectations. We can work with clients initially to develop the brief and determine how we can tailor our services to their specific requirements, whether it is for a feasibility study, to prepare detailed solutions for statutory approvals, or through to constructional completion of the project.
Our Services
The services we provide can be split into three main areas, and although some projects may not fit into any of these we will always approach each commission with the same high level of commitment and architectural expertise.
-->Residential
From small extensions through to one-off developments, we can guide your project from briefing, to design, planning and building regulations, all the way on to completion. We have experience with a range of work, and will be happy to show you our portfolio and discuss your ideas.
Commercial
A lot of our work has been commercial architecture projects, from refurbishment of existing shop and industrial developments to bespoke new builds. We also have experience with the catering sector, including extensions and refits of existing pubs and restaurants. Larger projects include our recent collaboration with Alan Newton Associates on Twycross Zoo.
Outsourcing
Since we launched, we’ve provided dedicated technical services to many bigger practices within Yorkshire and beyond to assist them with their resource shortfalls.
A big part of our initial business model involved being a trusted outsourcer by larger companies in order to deal with their work overflow, and this has proved very successful. We have provided a dedicated technical service to many bigger practices within Yorkshire and beyond to assist them with their resource shortfalls. In addition, although it is not provided in-house, we have a team of regular structural and M&E engineers, and can recommend builders and contractors appropriate for the work you need.
-->Recent Projects
The Old Coachouse Residential
This Coachouse, stable & hayloft has essentially remained unchanged
since its construction in the 1800’s. Situated within a courtyard to the rear
of an imposing Victorian merchant’s villa, the building retains many
historic features.
In a desire to preserve the fabric of the building, whilst bringing it into
practical use; the client commissioned Northlight Architecture create a
sympathetic conversion of the Coachouse for residential use.
Externally, the building remains virtually unchanged however the internal spaces have been transformed to provide two bedroom accommodation with associated living space. Insulation levels have been provided to modern standards and wood pellet space heating is proposed, reducing the overall CO2 emitted from the building.
Planning and Listed Building consent was granted in 2007 and building work is due to commence shortly.
Travelodge Hotel Commercial
Value: £1,500,000 Area: 200 square meters
This proposed new hotel is situated on the outskirts of Sheffield City Centre, close to the Meadowhall shopping centre and motorway network. The building will be sited within a larger mixed use development which occupies a difficult site between a canal and railway lines.
The hotel will provide 67 bedrooms with associated leisure facilities over 5 storeys. The design is based around the end users corporate brief, with floor plates set out on a modular grid and room layouts with bathroom pods being standardized.
Northlight Architecture was employed by the design & build contractor to secure all statutory approvals and to provide a full working drawings package. Construction is due to start in March 2007.
Extension to the Foxhouse Commercial
Value: £100,000 Area: 300 square meters
Northlight Architecture Limited was commissioned in 2008 to
oversee the alteration and extension of this popular Inn on
the hills above Holmfirth. The original Inn had been altered and
extended many times over the last century, and the resulting set of
buildings is sprawling in appearance.
The brief called for a masterplan for the building to be rolled out over the next decade or so, the outcome being a public house and modern country hotel.
The first phase of the works is to provide a two storey extension to the rear of the building, housing new kitchen facilities at ground floor with bedroom accommodation at first floor. This building has been designed in a way that allows the continued use of the existing kitchen throughout the construction period. A new entrance porch is also planned, and construction work began September 2008.
Mablethorpe Residential Care Home Healthcare
Value: £650,000 Area: 900 square meters
Northlight Architecture was commissioned in 2005 to provide a 2 storey extension to this existing residential care home facility in Lincolnshire. The existing building was the original manor house and the seat of the Fitzwilliam family. In more recent years the building has provided accommodation for 24 mentally infirm patients.
The client’s brief called for the provision of 16 additional bedrooms along with a large dining space, kitchens, laundry, leisure facilities and landscaped gardens. Improvement works to rooms and facilities within the existing building will also be carried out to bring the whole building closer in line with modern care standards.
The brief presented a number of problems in so far as providing a modern care facility which was also sympathetic in appearance to the adjacent manor house. Mablethorpe town is also within a high flood risk zone, therefore designs had to incorporate measures to protect from flood damage.
Planning permission was granted in August 2006 and construction work is planned for 2009.
